ESEF mandatory block tags samples

Starting this year, annual reports published in the european electronic format must identify sections of the notes to their consolidated financial statements if their meaning matches a fixed list of concepts.

There are several hurdles to using this list practice. The most critical may be that not all items of the list have a set definition.

Indeed, the fixed list created by the supervisor duplicates a list of commonly used themes for sections in the notes. Most importantly, they are not limited to themes precisely defined in the IFRS. As a matter of fact, the majority of the required concepts in the fixed list are such. This is of course a cause for concern for most stakeholders, as this may cause disagreements along the report creation and validation processes. Consumers of the produced data will also be faced with comparability issues when using these items.

A suggested approach for items that cannot be linked to well-understood definition is to keep following common practice. For instance, when should an issuer tag a section with the DisclosureOfProfitLossFromOperatingActivitiesExplanatory tag? That would be when they clearly identify a section of their notes as detailing their "profit (loss) from operating activities", or an equivalent name.

There are other, more tricky cases where the name of the tag refers to a defined concept, but where it is unclear what contents would be expected in such a note. For instance, while expenses by nature is a well-defined and well-understood concept in IFRS, the expected contents for a DisclosureOfExpensesByNatureExplanatory tag are much less clear.

To help all stakeholders understand how these tags are currently used, Corporatings makes available the collection of links below to actual and recent uses of these tags in notes to IFRS consolidated statements. These links are meant to help understand what kind of common practice may have lead to the inclusion of the tag in the IFRS Taxonomy list. The examples we link to are by nature not normative, and so they are not meant to be used as justifications for an ESEF tagging.

Items missing from the list, such as DisclosureOfNetAssetValueAttributableToUnitholdersExplanatory, have simply never been used by issuers so far.
